UPDATE:

Turns out there was ice built up in the dogbone. Reportedly all better now; picking up car shortly.

So I went out to run a few errands with my wife today, and we noticed that her 2.5L Jetta (about to turn 30k - due for 30k service) has a rather untoward vibration at idle all of a sudden. She's a magnificent driver, manual obviously, and has never done anything behind the wheel that would jar one of the motor mounts loose. Anyone else heard of this sort of thing happening? As soon as the rev counter goes above 1500, the motor smooths back out again.

Have a Hellcat for your time.

TL;DR sell it before the warranty runs out and your paying $1,200 to replace that motor mount at the dealer.

Coilpacks causing misfire at idle is my guess. Had it happen twice to our GTI so far in ~60k. Starts as a minor idle vibration, gets worse over time, then flashing CEL and reduced throttle response but no code, then eventually a misfire cylinder X code and solid CEL.

Don't know if the 2.5 uses the same coilpacks as the 2.0T, but they're pretty common across the VAG empire. The R8 uses a slightly modified one that's form and fit and that's what I've been using for about 20k with no issues (fingers crossed).

Edit: Sell it, your wife, and buy the Hellcat.

those motor mounts are pretty robust and hard to break down in that amount of time. All captive rubber too. Unless one of our fine assembly techs down in chattanooga didnt torque a bolt right, I think you might be chasing something else. No check engine light?

Makes sense. No MIL yet, but that was the first question from the service writer at the dealership when I called to make the appointment.

It's a Puebla car. No MIL... yet.

ah thats right, Jetta is built south of the border still. Regardless, hard for that rubber to come out of either mount. I was thinking maybe an injector/coil issue causing a low RPM misfire, but that MIL would be blinking at you the whole time. Curious now

The only time I let it play all the way out it took about 2 months to go from the initial vibrations to the solid CEL. The dealer refused to notice the vibration the first couple times I took it in and flat out told me that it couldn't have been flashing the CEL because there was no code stored.

The second time they pulled the same thing so I just took care of it myself. Not worth the headache for 80 bucks in parts and a 5 minute install.

The lack of a MIL is unusual if it's not a mount issue. It may be that whatever is at fault just hasn't been detected in consecutive drive cycles. The mileage is a little low for me to suspect carbon blockage in the intake ports, but if the car is primarily used for short trips it's possible, and rarely turns the MIL on. A failure of the intake runner flap system (often caused by carbon buildup) can do the same, but again the low mileage & lack of MIL makes that unlikely. Yet another possibility is the PCV diaphragm creating an internal vacuum leak, which won't set a code until the fuel trim gets out of range, but can cause running problems at idle that clear up once revved. Try taking the oil cap off with the engine running & see if it's sucked hard into the valve cover.

I've had 2 instances of my 2.5 idling real rough at start up. Both times the car had been sitting outside in cold weather for a few days, and both times it threw the check engine light as well. After removing the key and re-starting the problem vanished. I chalked it up to cold temp but who knows.
